Subgenre category finder

Tell us what kind of mystery you wrote. We'll rank the Kindle shelves that fit, from the most specific down, with a link to each live chart so you can see who you'd be up against.

Where these come from: Kindle category paths were read from Amazon.com's public Kindle Best Sellers pages on Oct 17, 2026. KDP's category picker can word things differently and Amazon changes shelves without notice, so every result is labelled verify on KDP before using.

Pick a subgenre to see your shelves.

How to use the results

  1. Open the chart for each shelf. If the top 20 books look nothing like yours (covers, tone, price), readers on that shelf won't buy yours either.
  2. Pick three per format. KDP gives each format (eBook, paperback, hardcover) its own three categories.
  3. Mix one reach and two realistic. A broad shelf like Mystery › Women Sleuths is busy; a narrow one like Cozy › Culinary may let a new book chart.
  4. Match your blurb and cover to the shelves you choose. Several authors on r/selfpublish report Amazon placing books based on keywords and reader behaviour, not just what was picked.

For cozy specifically, read Cozy mystery KDP categories, explained.
